About Floating

Floating is so much more than relaxing at a spa. At its core, floating is about relaxation, meditation, reducing stress and anxiety and pain relief. But, floating is also about getting in touch with your inner guidance, learning how to surrender, being vulnerable in a safe space, being present in your body and investing in your own physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. A Float tank is a place where you can calm your mind, relax your body and soothe your soul. As a result, many people fall in love with floating after just one experience in the tank – we sure did!

Floating – in the beginning

I knew nothing of sensory deprivation: I found the tank was and is a rich source of new experience… One is not deprived; one is rewarded

Dr. John c. lily

Floating began in the 1950’s with Dr. John C. Lilly, a Neuro Scientist who invented the sensory deprivation tank for intensive study of human consciousness when deprived of as much external stimulus as possible.

At the time, Scientists were questioning if the human brain would cease to function if all external stimuli were removed. Instead, Dr. Lilly’s research showed that sensory deprivation environment allowed for a deeply creative and introspective experience.

His research led to Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST) or more simply the terms Floatation Therapy or Floating that we know and love today. This therapy has allowed millions of people to calm the mind and body, do deeply personal development work and tap into incredible creativity in a float tank.

If you are familiar with the Joe Rogan Podcast, you have likely heard him talk about floating repeatedly. He uses floating to fuel his highly successful career in entertainment, his athletic pursuits and for some incredibly insightful personal development. We are fans, to say the least.

What to Expect

When you come for a float, you will see a specifically engineered tank, filled with water and about 1000 lbs of Epsom salts which allows our bodies to float on the surface . The water is kept at skin temperature, making it seem like your body ‘disappears’ into it. The tank is quiet and dark, creating a place for our bodies to be free from gravity and stimulation from the outside world.

In this environment, our bodies are free to re-direct the energy that it would normally use to counteract the forces of gravity into recuperating and healing. Our minds are free from outside stimulation and therefore have an opportunity to explore deep meditation and tap into creative processes. Check out more of our Float FAQ’s and our Float Tips

Why we Float

In today’s world, it is more important than ever to disconnect to reconnect and to practice extreme self care.

People are often drawn to floating initially to find relief from physical pain, stress or anxiety. These benefits on their own are powerful and long-lasting. However, people who float regularly will tell you that these benefits are only the tip of the iceberg as far listing the positive changes that come from floating regularly.

“Floating has become my constant. My safe space. My escape. In today’s world, these types of spaces are becoming more and more difficult to find. In my float practice, I have the quiet expansiveness to decompress and make sense of the world around me, vividly outline my business and personal goals, shed light on personal baggage and change some limiting behaviours and beliefs. Pairing this with some deep rest, epic naps and ugly-crying has made me a better version of myself. It is my mission to provide a space for as many people as possible to do the same for themselves.”

Like anything good in life, floating can take a little practice. First floats are normally awesome and can be a brand new experience in many ways. So, knowing what to expect is a big piece of float #2. In your second float, you know what you like, what you don’t like, and what you would do differently. By float #3, most people find their floating bliss. So, we highly recommend trying floating three times before deciding if floating is for you.

Bliss Float Centre is Kamloops’ only Float Centre.  Our friendly and knowledgeable staff will assist you with your floating experience. Come and experience nothing with us!

We are hooked on these amazing, deeply therapeutic and BLISSFUL floating experiences! You get a very clean, private room with shower, towels etc… and the float cabins are big enough to stand in. I love how we can customize our experience with audio, mood light or complete darkness. The staff are super friendly and helpful. 90 minutes of floating meditation is truly awesome! Deep whole-body/mind relaxation. Bye bye stress,
